Forty-six young men and women can now proudly call themselves Young Marines.
Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington congratulated the recruits of Bossier Sheriff Young Marines Class 25 during a standing-room only graduation ceremony at the Viking Drive Substation Monday night.
Whittington, who has served in various youth programs over the years such as D.A.R.E. and Boy Scouts, challenged the young men to women to continue what they’ve learned in the Young Marines program. “You have been taught a lot about self-discipline, teamwork and leadership over these past 13 weekends,” he said, “and I encourage you to keep growing in order to be successful at school and whatever career field you enter.”
Awards were given in four categories: Academic award went to Ronald A. Secondi, Jr., Physical Fitness award was given to Joevaraus D. Owens, Most Improved Award went to Alex J. Little, and the Honor Graduate was Winston B. Harrison, Jr.
Five recruits were meritoriously promoted to Young Marine/Private First Class: Connor A. Bartlett, Chad B. Hamilton, Winston B. Harrison, Jr., Griffin P. Millender and Michael P.C. Minamyer, Jr.
The Floyd L. Baxter, Red River Detachment of the Marine Corps League Award was presented to Challance J. Jenkins.
The commanding officer of the Bossier Sheriff Young Marines is Deputy Steve Hoff, an 8-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and 1980 graduate of Parkway High School. Assisting with the instruction are volunteer instructors from the United States Marine Corps assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines here in Bossier City.
Bossier Sheriff Young Marines Class 26 begins orientation Saturday at the Viking Drive Substation, and the first day of training will be held Oct. 13. To find out more about the program, call 965-3500.
